Welcome to June's Sharks4Kids Marine Science Hangout! Each month we connect with a different marine scientist or ocean explorer to learn about our oceans (spoiler alert, sharks might be featured once or twice!). Anybody can watch live and we'll pick 4-5 classes for each session to participate directly on screen with an unlimited number able to watch the live stream. This month we are going to have a couple of sessions using a Q&A format and lasting 30 minutes instead of the usual hour. Questions can be sent in advance, asked live via the chat sidebar and of course from the onscreen classes.
This month we will connect with Rachel Butler. She's an assistant producer who has worked on many blue chip programs such as BBC Shark and Ocean. She's has also produced several short and full length features such as Beyond the Bite. Rachel's job takes her to some amazing locations around the world and she has produced and directed some amazing sequences. Some of these include:
- Tiger sharks - Great Barrier Reef
- Whale shark and manta rays - Isla Mujeres
- Great whites - Guadalupe
- White tip reef sharks - Galapagos
- Ragged tooth sharks - North Carolina
- Epaulette sharks - Great Barrier Reef
- Lemon sharks - Bimini, Bahamas
- Long lining shoot off Spain
Looking at this impressive list, you'd think that Rachel has always been comfortable in the water with sharks. This couldn't be further from the truth as she was afraid of sharks. She overcame her fear and discovered another side to their infamous fearsome image…and learned to love sharks. The goal of Sharks4Kids is to create a new generation of shark advocates through access to a dynamic range of educational materials. Curriculum, games, activities, photos and videos from scientists, videographers and conservationists bring an exciting element into the classroom and show students the beauty of sharks and the ocean. A unique opportunity for the next generation to learn why sharks need kids and kids need sharks.
