Sarfaraz Ahmed said Pakistan's team morale is high even after India defeat
Pakistan take on South Africa in a must-win match in London on Sunday
Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has urged the cricket fans back home to refrain from abusing players but maintained they have every right to criticise the team.
Stressing that abusive reactions hurt the players and their families psychologically, Sarfaraz Ahmed said Pakistan fans are emotional about the game but the players also feel the pressure when representing the country at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has been facing severe criticism from former players and fans alike after their 89-run defeat to arch-rivals India in June 16 at Old Trafford.
A picture of Sarfaraz Ahmed yawning on the field even as India were going great guns during their batting innings went viral on social media, leading to funny and, at times, abusive memes.
Questions over Sarfaraz's fitness was raised and a section of Pakistan fans even body-shamed the skipper at Old Trafford. An unruly fan was also seen hurling hurtful comments at Sarfaraz when the Pakistan captain was at UK mall with his son.
"Yawning is a normal thing to do, I didn't commit a sin. If people made money out of me yawning, that's a good thing," Sarfaraz Ahmed told the press at Lord's, London.
"Social media and media are not in our control. They are so big that you cannot stop them. Teams have lost before but now on social media it is unstoppable. Whoever thinks [anything, they just] write it on social media. That hurts, too much. Players are affected psychologically.
Criticise us on our game, that's not an issue, but don't abuse us. Their families get affected. If someone is hitting, then pushing anyone that's not good.
"Our fans are emotional and these same people lift us when we win. But if they feel sad on a defeat we also feel the same way. We feel it much more because we are playing for Pakistan."
Following a 5-day break, Pakistan are gearing up for a test against South Africa at Lord's on Sunday. Captain Sarfaraz believes the team morale is high and that Pakistan can stage a comeback in a bid to make the last-four.
Pakistan are reeling at the 9th spot with just 3 points from 5 matches but Sri Lanka's win over England on Friday has added spice to the tournament, giving teams at the bottom-half of the points table a glimmer of hope.
"It (loss against India) was tough for us but after the match, we gave our players two days' rest. Then after three days, we were practising hard. Morale is still very high for us. The tournament is open now, so we have a chance and we are focussing match by match. Hopefully we can start by beating South Africa," Sarfaraz added.
